Ray: My opinion on oil additives runs counter to that of a lot of other Model A'ers so you be the judge.

I have used STP oil additive in every engine I have owned for the past 30 years. Including Continental and Lycoming aircraft engines, Cummins, Cat and Detroit Diesel heavy equipment engines in cranes and truck tractors, my personal cars and now my Model A's. I have seen the inside of many of these engines during routine maintenance and a complete teardown of a Cummins for an electrolysis problem and have seen no evidence that STP causes buildup in the engine. Lab reports on oil samples has borne out my opinion that once in suspension it remains in suspension.

The lubricating qualities of a mixture of gear lube and STP are evident from using in the planetaries on crane carriers. Even in the summer heat of AZ I never had a failure of a planetary gear on a crane carrier.

My only advise to anyone using STP would be that the oil be changed religously in any engine. This because I have always changed on a routine and won't question success.

STP also works well in the trans and rear end of my Model A's and the steering gear box as well.

As for the other two additives mentioned I have not used them so cannot comment.

Other than that I'm really noncommittal on the subject.

God speed under 50.

The Model A Fool.
: Anyone have any thoughts on using STP, Duralube or Slick 50 type products in a model A engine? Are they an extra insurance policy or just so much hype? Can they cause harm?

: My 28 engine seems fine, uses no oil and isn't equipped with a oil filter.I dropped the pan ( to repair a leaking oil pump inspection plate )and the bottom half of the engine is clean. I have no information on what type of oil the previous owner used.My concern is infrequent start ups and the resulting metal to metal contact.
