Some of the things that can cause this condition are, in the order I personally would troubleshoot; PPC, ie; Points, Plugs and condensor. Check all three. Do you have a modern point plate or standard. I had a lot of trouble with the modern set up that was in my car and went back to original. The coil Tester that is offerred by Snyder's and some of the other parts houses saves a lot of head scratching and is worth the 16 or so that it costs. If you are not backfiring but just chugging on acceleration you may just have a junked up fuel system. The old tanks are sometimes pretty dirty and as the car is brought back to life the dirt starts to move around. An in line filter under the hood will solve this. If the spark plugs are pretty much carboned up clean and regap, sometimes dirty plugs will not stand the open throttle.
If the coil is weak it may run the car at idle but not under load. I have a neat original that will click 'em off at idle or just above but any higher and it breaks down.

God speed under 50.

: I have a problem with a loss of smooth acceleration. The engine will miss when you wind it up to shift gears.I have played with gas mixture but it does not seem to help much.Does anyone have any suggestions for what to check?
