: Is it true that there is an indentation underneath the plug on the front of the timing cover that a screwdriver will fall into to tell you that you are ready to fire #1.Any advice on timing and info. on how to get a good service manual would be helpful.

The plug you refer to is a timing pin. if your engine does not have a pin that screws into the front surface of the timing gear cover and the hole is "plugged" then someone has phunorked with your engine and lost the pin replacing it with a threaded (I hope it's threaded) plug. Timing pins are available from all the suppliers. The newer timing gears have an indentation that is rather skimpy and hard to find. I remove the timing pin and use an awl in it's place. Rotate the engine with the crank while holding the awl or punch or whatever until you find the indentation. Sometimes it takes the touch of a safecracker but it's there. Now you are at TDC of numero uno and ready to set the timing. Don't forget to replace the pin when you are finished. If you forget two words come to mind; Exxon Valdez....

The books you need are How to restore Your Model A vols 1 thru 3 and Jim Schilds Shop manual. These volumes combined with a little lamp oil and you will soon "savy the mule" on this wonderful litttle car.
