It's supposed to be true, but some timing gears these days have a VERY shallow indent that's hard to find.

You're supposed to unscrew the plug, and reverse it into the hole and find the depression that way while turning the motor slowly.Then set the distributer cam so that the rotor faces the #1 spark plug and the points JUST open in the direction of forward rotation with the spark lever two notches down from full retard.Then tighten the cam and you'll be timed pretty accurately.

Make sure the advance lever on the distributer traverses the width of the notch in the distributer body when the advance lever is moved to its extremes.Bend the rod \ linkage to correct if necessary.
