1931 Ford Model A wiring diagram

My grandfather has an old old 1931 ford model a.The battery keeps draining or the generator is not charging correctly.We looked at a wiring diagram he had but it was not real clear.It looked as though the wires were connected correctly.The ampmeter had voltage on both sides, but the diagram almost made it look like it was suppose to be there.There were no polarity markings on it.Is it ok for voltage to be on both sides of the ampmeter as long as there is no current?Is there a clear diagram of how to hook up these wires and how the polarity should be.It would be great to help him out.you know, get on the good side of grandpa.I don't know enough about old cars to help him.
Any information or diagrams would be appreciated if you can help.
