electrical discharge

Help! my old battery finally gave up the ghost.So I replaced it with a new unit and now while driving, my ammeter shows heavy discharge.Prior to the new battery, all was well with a 6-8 amp positive charge when driving.Is the cutout stuck or do I need to polarize the generator?Your help is appreciated.
