: I would appreciate any comments - pro or con - for the "modern" upper distributor plate.I am sometimes a little leary of such modifications.I like to hear the experiences of others who have tried them.

Wayne,
I made plates for both my cars using some old original style plates. They work very well. However, like Edison and his light bulb, there were some unsuccessful attempts. The position of the points on the plates is verrrry critical. Other folks in our club have bought them from suppliers (Bratton's and Snyder's)and theirs work equally as well. There are stories around that some plates are not made properly and are troublesome.I have no experience with that. You may be interested in why do it?One very good reason is is that it moves the condensor away from the heat of the exhaust manifold.Which can cause premature condensor failure. The heat deflectors help a little in that area.Another one is the poor quality of the rubbing blocks on the reproduction original style points. The block wears rapidly even with the use of cam lubricant. For some reason I have not had that problem with late style ('55) points.Unless you like to tinker and build your own, buy one. You'll like it.
Have fun!
Paul
