My Model A problem..

I need your help.Perhaps you or your Model A friends can help me solve my problem. My engine will not accelerate smoothly without "backfiring" as the engine increases speed.I think the timing is alright.I am using a Model "B" distributor that has the "flying" weights timing advance during acceleration. The "B" distributor also has a plate that can be moved a little to fine tune the timing, and that seems to work the best when it's centered, which indicates that the timing is close. My Model "A" friend, who has the 1903 Model "A" let me borrow two of his "test carburetors" to see if that was the problem. The engine ran the same with his two and my two carburetors. The engine really idles nice with all four carburetors. So now I'm really puzzled.

Another problem is that all four carburetors seem to run rich even with the dash control almost off.I pulled a plug and it was all black too.

I hope you can help me..
