The pan with the drain holes drilled in it was probably used on an engine that was modified for a full oil pressure system to the crank and rods, rather than the dip and drip original oiling system. The holes are drilled to allow the oil to drain back to the bottom of the pan faster. In the full oil pressure system the scoop holes in the bottom of the rods are plugged as there is no need to scoop up the oil to feed the rod bearings.
