If it's a stock pump, the end play (installed) should be about 0.006" - 0.010" (re: Bratton). The impeller is intended to ride all the way forward on its thrust washer up against the rear of the back bushing flange. The end of the shaft, then, rides the boss cast inside the head for a back stop. This can get pretty worn, and adjustments are normally made by building up the end of the pump shaft with weld, and smoothing it down to the proper length (or shoving the shaft farther through the impeller, and re-pinning).

If you're replacing stuff, extra length shafts are available for badly worn situations.

Mine had a stack of washers (some of which fit the shaft fairly well)inside the fan pulley to take up the end play - Ah, the good old days.
