One more thing to check. If the starter quits suddenly when you try to start the car but the lights and horn still work, your car may have a problem in the starter's bendix assembly as it tried to engage to the ring gear on the flywheel. The starter on my '31 Tudor sometimes hangs up as I try to start it up.Seems like the bendix jams into the ring gear. What I do is to put the car in 1st or Reverse and then go to the front of the car and grab the bumper and violently rock the car back and forth. When I hear a thump, the bendix has been kicked free and it usually will turn over on the next try. Check the battery condition first; it's usually the problem. But if a healthy battery suddenly won't let the starter turn over, check out the bendix problem. |
