Walt,
Welcome to the hobby.
The oil return tubes on occaision unscrewed from the rear main and drop down into the oil pan which does away with the drain.Some restorerers tack weld them in place to keep it where it belongs.Also, in additional to cutting off the end of the tube as Bob suggested, some drill a vent holes through the return tube to eliminate air that might be blocking the return tube.Some Model As will leak if they are parked on an incline to the rear of the car.
