motometer thermometer replacement

I have a 30-31 motometer rad cap (not original) with a broken thermometer.A replacement thermometer is sold but when looking at my motometer, I see no way that it can be taken apart.I am thinking that maybe the replacement thermometers will only work with an original and that the repros are not repairable.Has anyone out there come across this problem?
