Powerhouse Generator Output

The books say that to INCREASE charging current, move the third brush in the direction of rotation. That would be down in the diagram? below. That would lower the voltage across the field,there would be less field current, less flux would result, so LESS armature current would flow. How do I get out of this apparent contradiction?
