: I have taken my instrument panel and gearshift lever to
: the plater to be plated in "butler" finish nickel plating.
: This is for a '29 PU. I would like to get a more detailed
: description of the original "butler" finish for these items.
: It is my understanding that the pieces are taken through the
: plating process and then they are buffed to a satin sheen
: which leaves a brushed appearance. The plater asked me if
: I wanted the brushed finished to be vertical or horizontal
: on the instrument panel and also which direction on the
: gearshift lever.
: I would like to find out if there is some kind of a pattern
: to the finish or if it is just a random "brushed" finish.
: I will also post this to the MAFCA answer page.
: Thanks,

Dan,
According to a paper written by Bill Lancaster ('29 Town Sedan Club) with tech support by Tom Laken, "the Butler finish has a satin-like soft appearance with a slight sparkle or dull luster. It is obtained by using a glue based greasless compound containing 150-180 grit emory" via a buffing wheel (not a wire brush which can imbed carbon steel into the plating!)"The shape of the specific part will form a basis for deciding on a specific pattern.A regular pattern in basically one direction would be used on small slender parts like door handles and window cranks. The instrument panel requires more thought as to how to create a pattern."But it should not be a noticeable pattern of heavy scratches. This process is very time consuming and most platers will not spend the time (translated as costly) and effort needed to obtain the best finish.A great deal of care must be taken to make sure the chrome or nickel is not completely buffed away or broken through.
