Hugh,

The deal is that you will get a differnet answer from everyone that you ask.First you are suppose to use 600W oil in the steering box, transmission and rear end. 600W is not something that you can get at your local auto parts store. Most of the Model A parts houses sell a substitute that is a sticky 140W, buy it and use it.

Engine oil. I will tell you what I know.First the Model A came out before detergent oils were readily available. Therefore it 'grew up' using non detergent oils. Also multi weight oils were not available in the 30's.They also did not have seat belts but that does not mean that you should not use them. There is no reason why you should not use a multi weight oil.The only problem with detergent oils is that they suspend the dirt and are meant to be used with a filter. Non-detergent oils will not suspend the dirt and it will collect at the bottom of your pan.If you do not use your Model A very often then just change the oil every year. If you drive your Model A many miles each year then install an oil filter and you can save money because you will not have to change the oil as often and the will be less wear on the engine. Bottom line use a good multi-grade oil.

I know you did not ask but it is OK to use un-leaded gas. If your exhaust valves are not really intake valves you should not have any problems.

Bob
