Hey Brian, Try this -
With the engine idling, pop the throttle wide open momentarily, and then close it again.

If the sound stays, but rises in pitch when the engine speeds up, it's mechanical in origin - could be the generator, or the rubbing block on the distributer cam. Another source would be the starter bendix not coming clear of the ring gear.

If it disappears when the throttle is opened and re-appears when closed, it's vacuum related - probably a portion of a gasket oscillating like a reed. Try tightening the manifold and carb bolts a little.It they're involved the sound should change.
