Scott-
There are a lot of different techniques for woodgraining, but one I found worked well on my car and is "forgiving" if you make a mistake is: 1.Prepare and paint the mouldings with the basecoat - prime, fill, and sand first as nesessary to get a really smooth surface. You can use any paint type (enamel, laquer, or arcylic urethane) for the basecoat.
2. Experiment with the grain color using a water-based poster paint. The advantage of a water-based paint is it is very easy to clean-up or change as you experiment with graining techniques.Try using a brush with long flexible bristles and "slap" the part lightly as you move it along. Usually a dark brown or black paint is used for the graining. After you get it like you like it, 3. Spray a clear laquer or acrylic urethane "clear coat" to protect the graining.
Good luck!
