Adjustable Valve Tappets

My B engine sounds like a well oiled sewing machine because the valves and lifters clatter a little, but maybe that's a good noise according to other opinions.One of my Model A parts books shows the double lock adjustable valve tappets, but says, "for easy adjustment, adjust these with valve springs and timing gear removed".I really don't want to tear the engine down that far to install these.Any advice?
