: When I had my first "A", I dumped anything in the crankcase : that closely resembled oil. Would I be looking for trouble : to use a 10-40 or 20-50 modern oil, presuming that I change : it before it turns black? Thanks! : Regards from Maine, Eric Hi Eric.. Over the years, there have been many articles in the MAFCA and MARC magazines regarding the use of detergent oils in the Model A written by their Lubrication Engineers. In all cases, as far as I can recall, not one of the articles said that detergent oils were harmful to the babbit bearing materials in the Model A engines.I have used 10 W 30 in my B engine with no harmful effects.I do have an oil filter which I highly recommend to filter out the dirt and minute particles, as detergent oils hold that material in suspension, while non-detergent oils allow that stuff to settle in the bottom of the crankcase.Another popular opinion, only use detergent oils in a newly rebuilt engine.I'm sure there are many out there who will dispute this opinion, but the oil guys seem to rule supreme. |
