Timing Pin

I'm trying to time my 30 coupe, I can't seem to find the timing slot in the cam gear! The books that I've read say to slide the timing pin into the small hole in the cam gear while turning the engine over! I seem to feel a indentation in the cam gear but not a hole! Is this correct? Should the timing pin lock right into a hole? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
