Dear Jack,
I have a '31 Model 'A' that had a similar noise to the one that you described, however, I don't recall it being intermittent or temperature related. The problem that I had was the timing gear coming loose and rattling. I was amazed that the gear could be as loose as it was and not instantly disintegrate or cause performance to suffer. I drove my car with this loud clatter, thinking that I was going to have to rebuild the engine but didn't want to do it until after the summer, for several hundred miles. On the advice of an elderly gentleman friend with an endless, and sometimes seemingly beyond belief, repertoire of stories I grudgingly checked the timing gear through the small access cover. I simply didn't
believe that the timing gear could make such a noise...It was literally falling off! As I recall, the retaining nut is not a standard hex nut but requires a special tool (this was years ago), but I was able to tighten the nut with a screwdriver or chisel or something as a roadside fix. I corrected the problem properly over the winter and haven't had any further problems with it. My friend gloated, I had a nice plate of crow, and my coupe chimed in with its legendary "pucketa-pucketa"
