Mitch,
Yes the tank is part of the body, sort of.But it can be removed.It is attached to the rest of the body with screws and clamps. The front and back of the tank are attached with screws and the sides are held on with small clamps. You also have to disconnect everything going to the instrument panel.Since the welting between the tank and the rest of the body is usually painted you would have to do some repainting after you put the tank back unless you were very careful and lucky.
