Transmission Noise

I have a '29 closed cab pickup which has a clicking noise only in third gear.It's too slow to be engine related (maybe twice per second) but is definitely roadspeed related.By putting the rear axle on blocks, running the car in third with the parking brake applied lightly and listening from the transmission all the way back to the rear axles with a stethoscope, it appears loudest at the differential at the rear of the transmission.Before I start tearing things apart and searching blindly, any ideas anyone has would be greatly appreciated.Thanks!
