Jerry,

I do not think that Bondo is the right material to stop leaks in a gas tank.Since Bondo is a plastic it would not be very gas resistant and might break down.Perhaps the Bondo was put on to fix a dent and not a leak. I agree that the only way you are going to find out is to strip it down and see what you have.If you have it chemically cleaned be sure that all traces of the chemicals are gone before you use a tank sealer (use an alcohol resistant sealer if you use a sealer). Do not sand blast the inside of the tank, it is very hard to get all the sand out.

I cleaned the inside of my tank by first puting in a handful of nuts and bolts (count them first). Then I shook the tank for a long time to loosen the rust and junk. Next I flushed it with water. Then I filled the tank with a caustic solution (Lye and water). Then I connected the negative side of a battery charger to the tank and the + side to a piece of scrap iron.I put the scarp iron in the tank it MUST NOT touch any part of the tank.I turned on the charger at about 5 amps and let it run for a day. What should happen is the rust in the tank will be turned back into iron (dust) and the scrap iron will be turned into rust.It seemed to work. Lastly I flushed out the tank with water and sealed it with a gas tank sealer after it had dried.

Bob
