In theory, a camshaft timing gear can be changed in the
parking lot at a tour if you have to.In reality, there
can be some problems.Obviously, you can get right to them.
Take off: headlight bar, hood, radiator, timing covers, and
pan and you're there. But now what? One way or the other,
you can get the big nuts off, but now, the gears. These can
get so stuck that only a press will push them off their
respective shafts.Pullers can work, but they can also damage
the shaft ends if used incorrectly. If the pullers do work
(and truely, this is doubtful in the case of the crank gear),
you're in business.If they don't, you'll have to remove
the shaft in question and press the gear off, press the new
one on (why not? - the press is right there) and put it back
in being very careful (in the case of the crank) to observe
where shims went, etc.In case of camshaft, if you have to take
it out, you know the drill - turn the car upside down so the
lifters won't fall out and then pull out the shaft .....
No, seriously, if you have to pull the cam you'll have to
pull the head as well as the pan and pretty well pull out the
full valve train to get that thing out and then back in again
unless someone knows a really clever trick I haven't tried.??
